Dare I say Back-to-School!

Dare I say Back-to-School!

A few weeks ago, I wrote about Nick’s Grass Fed Beef Sticks.

I didn’t think it would be possible, but my love for Nick’s Sticks have grown even more.

Why, you ask?

My four-year-old daughter and my seven-year-old daughter have fallen in love with them too. I keep telling myself that this is a good thing, because they now have a high-protein, totally-healthy-for-them, feel-good-about-it, easy-to-pack snack; however, sometimes it is hard to share something that I like to eat so much myself! I guess that just means I have to buy more!

Now, I have portable protein for all of us, when we head out to the beach or camping!

I also need to restock my supply because sadly, summer is dwindling away and we need to soon start thinking about school, and school lunches. I will also be picking up some organic freeze-dried fruit (Blueberries! Strawberries! Cherries! Raspberries!) to put in their lunches as well!

Ciao for now!

Let’s Talk Smoothies!

Let’s Talk Smoothies!

I have two daughters, and one of our favorite things to mix up each day is a green smoothie. I LOVE knowing that they are getting a big dose of super healthy foods! They love helping me figure out what to put in our smoothies, and I make sure I teach them about those healthy ingredients as well!

I know that there are smoothie recipes all over the place, and I don’t even have a recipe, I just have some general guidelines that we follow when we’re throwing stuff in the blender. (A few years ago, I made an awesome “big” purchase…I saved up birthday and Christmas money and finally bought a Vitamix blender!) Here are the four categories of ingredients that we put into each smoothie:

Superfoods:

Raw and Organic Spirulina Powder

Raw and Organic Chlorella Powder

Veggies:

Baby spinach

Kale

Carrots

Fruit:

Frozen bananas

Frozen mango

Frozen strawberries

Frozen blueberries

Liquid:

Water (about 75% of the liquid that I add is plain old filtered water)

Juice of some sort, whatever we have on hand (about 25% of the liquid that we add)

More information about the above ingredient ingredients:

I love the added punch of the powdered superfoods (spirulina and chlorella). Through trial and error, I have figured out how much powder I am able to add to each smoothies (we make a full container, enough for 4 big classes of smoothie!). I am able to generally get away with adding around 1+ TBSP for the four of us. 2 TBSP and beyond is too much, considering they are both types of algae!

Spirulina and Chlorella are both powerfoods, full of digestible protein, lots of vitamins and nutrients, and antioxidants. You can be assured that the Spirulina and Chlorella offered by The Natural Health Advocates are super pure and wholesome.

We do not typically make our smoothies very thick. If you like thick smoothies, one awesome addition would be chia seeds!

I am really able to pack in the veggies. The amount of greens that my girls get in each smoothie is the equivalent to a large salad for an adult. We throw in raw carrots as well, the Vitamix pulverizes them so that you don’t realize whether they are in there or not!

We love to add our fruit in frozen. I buy more bananas then we regularly eat, and will peel them and break them in half and add them to the freezer. My magic fruit, though, is the frozen mango. Mango has been a smoothie constant ever since we first tried it. It adds so much flavor and even seems to make it a little creamier!

One time, I found a great deal at a discount grocery store for giant containers of organic baby spinach and organic baby kale, so I bought all I could, stuffed the leaves into gallon plastic bags, and put them in the freezer!!! When I used the frozen greens plus frozen fruit, plus a little bit of liquid, it made SMOOTHIE ICE CREAM!!!!! Our smoothies were so frozen and thick, that we could eat them with spoons, and my girls thought this was the greatest thing ever!

Enjoy!

Have You Tried Simply Ghee Black Garlic Ghee Yet?

Have You Tried Simply Ghee Black Garlic Ghee Yet?

I was told “You are going to want to lick the jar!” Well let me tell you…that was just the beginning!

I received my Simply Ghee, Black Garlic flavor a few days ago. It took me about 10 seconds from when my package came through the door until I tried that lovely ghee.

I should probably be honest with you at this point. I imagined myself putting it on so many things. I wanted to savor the jar and let out my inner foodie! I wanted to cook an absolutely blissful meal, try it on toast, on veggies, on pizza, fry an egg in it…I could go on. However when push came to shove, I whipped off the lid and stuck my finger into the jar. YES, I did. It was a moment where a grown woman lost control in the excitement of trying something new, and boy did it feel good!

Now that I have confessed to you all, l must ask. Have you tried ghee yet? If your answer is no, you are missing out! I’m not new to ghee. It’s something I cook and bake with often and it has become one of my pantry staples. It is one of the few “dairy” products that I am able to use and boy am I thankful (so is my butter loving husband). Ghee is made by gently heating butter and removing the lactose (sugars) and the caseins (proteins). With the lactose and caseins removed only the rich golden oil remains. This oil contains the optimal ratio of Omega 3/Omega 6 and fat soluble vitamins A, D, E & K. I find that ghee has all the great flavor of butter with a texture similar to that of softened room temperature butter. Since the lactose and caseins are removed those that may have a hard time eating traditional dairy are sometimes able to tolerate ghee, such as myself. Whew!

So what’s black garlic and why put it in ghee? As I understand it, black garlic is a fermented garlic. Through the fermentation process what was once raw and pungent garlic flavor becomes this wonderful mild savory garlic flavor. It almost has an ever so slightly sweet or molasses like tone to it. Black garlic also boasts double the antioxidants that traditional raw garlic holds. There is one more secret, I’ve read that black garlic won’t make you have that stinky garlic breath that raw garlic so often leaves behind. All this being said, am such a garlic lover and was just so excited about this new flavor. When I say garlic lover, I mean it. I put it into 50-70% of the meals that I prepare for my family. When Simply Ghee came out with the Black Garlic flavor, purchasing it to try was a no brainer for me. After tasting it, I would describe it as a nice mild garlic flavor whipped into this light and airy ghee with an accent of sea salt. Can you tell that I really love it?

Mix that fabulous mild black garlic flavor and healthy antioxidants, with the wonderful nourishing tradition of ghee (made from grass fed butter as Simply Ghee is) and I don’t believe you can go wrong. It’s a great match!

From now on when you peek into my pantry, you’ll spot at least one jar of Black Garlic Simply Ghee. I may actually need to keep one just for myself and one for guests. I can’t guarantee I, or another family member, won’t dip a finger into it again!

If you like garlic, I’d recommend you pick up a jar of Simply Ghee Black Garlic. Cook with it and let me know if it unleashed your inner foodie or if you were like me and just couldn’t wait. Either way, go for it and enjoy!
